Oporto, 1 February 2013 - UPTEC
, the Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto – part of Portugal Ventures’ Ignition Partner Network – has won the RegioStars award in the category for “Smart Growth: Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto (UPTEC) - North of Portugal”.
Founded in 2007, it is open to students, teachers, investigators and businessmen with a project or business idea that has high technology potential. Today, UPTEC is home to 113 companies, of which 97 are start-ups and spin-offs, in areas as diverse as Agriculture, Design, Advertising, Pharmaceuticals, Electronics, Event Planning, Gaming and Robotics. On the whole, UPTEC companies, from the smallest to the well-established, represent over 900 jobs and, in 2011, generated a sales volume of 177 million Euros (of which 168 million Euros were from Innovation Centres).
The RegioStars awards were first handed out in 2008 by the European Commission and aim to reward good practices in public policies for regional development and to highlight innovative projects.
